The Paranormal Activity Revival: A New Chapter or a Haunted Retread?

Tuason’s ability to create tension in a medium that demands constant engagement could be a game-changer for the franchise. His influences—The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project, and the original Paranormal Activity—hint at a deep respect for the genre’s roots. But will he lean into nostalgia or break new ground?
This raises a deeper question: Can Paranormal Activity reclaim its relevance in 2027? The horror landscape has evolved dramatically since the first film. We’ve seen the rise of elevated horror (Hereditary, The Witch), the resurgence of slasher icons (Halloween, Scream), and the globalization of scares (Train to Busan, The Wailing). A found-footage film in 2027 feels almost retro, like unearthing an old camcorder in your attic.
From my perspective, the casting of Sonia Mena and Chase Yi is both a nod to the past and a bet on the future. Mena, fresh off Tell Me Lies, brings a modern edge, while Yi’s comedic roots in Mythic Quest add an unexpected layer. What this really suggests is that the film might not take itself too seriously—a wise move for a franchise that’s often been criticized for its convoluted mythology.
